Vijayendra accuses Karnataka CM of shirking responsibility towards sugarcane growers

Bengaluru, Oct 25 (UNI) BJP Karnataka president Vijayendra Yediyurappa on Sunday accused Chief Minister DK Shivakumar of shirking the state government's responsibility towards sugarcane growers and demanded that Karnataka announce a support price for the crop.
Accusing the Chief Minister of playing politics over the issue, Vijayendra alleged that Shivakumar, after meeting sugarcane growers, had sought to portray their concerns as the Centre's responsibility, despite the state government benefiting substantially from the sugar industry.
"Thousands of crores of rupees in revenue accrue to the state government through the efforts of sugarcane growers," he said, arguing that the government could not distance itself from the farmers' demands.
Pointing out that Haryana and Bihar were providing support prices to sugarcane growers, Vijayendra asked why Karnataka could not extend similar assistance to its farmers.
He said the Narendra Modi-led union government had facilitated value addition through initiatives such as ethanol production, contributing to increased revenues, but alleged that the state government was failing to safeguard the interests of sugarcane growers.
Vijayendra urged Shivakumar to stop politicising the issue and take responsibility for addressing farmers' concerns.
In a separate attack on the state government, the BJP leader alleged that Karnataka's finances were in a precarious condition and claimed that the state treasury was virtually empty.
Referring to drought relief, he alleged that the government had announced assistance of Rs 2,500 for a farmer's family but had failed to disburse even that amount. He also accused the government of cutting Below Poverty Line ration cards under the pretext of implementing its guarantee schemes.
On the proposed route march in his constituency, Vijayendra said he would participate and maintained that such marches had not resulted in communal clashes or law-and-order disturbances. He advised Minister Priyank Kharge to focus on his department and address concerns over law and order and atrocities against Dalits instead of targeting the RSS.
On the alleged sting operation involving former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Vijayendra called for a transparent investigation, alleging that the Chief Minister had failed to take the matter seriously despite Siddaramaiah's claim of a conspiracy against him.
