BJP, Cong workers clash during West Graduates’ Constituency poll in Gadag

Gadag, Oct 23 (UNI) Tension prevailed at a polling centre in Gadag on Friday as workers of the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP clashed during polling for the Karnataka West Graduates’ Constituency, prompting police to intervene and restore order.
The confrontation took place outside Municipal College, where workers of both parties raised slogans in support of their respective leaders. BJP workers backed senior party leader and MLA C.C. Patil, while Congress cadres raised slogans in support of Karnataka Minister H.K. Patil.
The situation escalated after BJP workers alleged that Congress cadres were allowed inside the designated polling station premises in violation of Election Commission guidelines. They also accused the local police of failing to enforce the mandatory 100-metre restricted zone around the polling centre.
MLA C.C. Patil confronted police personnel and demanded the immediate removal of Congress workers from the premises. Police had to intervene to control the rival groups and prevent the situation from escalating further.
The incident occurred amid a keen contest for the West Graduates’ Constituency, where incumbent BJP MLC S.V. Sankanur is seeking a third consecutive term against Congress candidate Mohan Limbikai, an advocate and former MLC who previously belonged to the BJP.
Sankanur cast his vote at Municipal College in Gadag and expressed confidence in retaining the seat, citing the turnout at polling stations.
Polling for the biennial Legislative Council elections began at 8 am and concluded at 4 pm on Friday. Counting of votes will take place on October 27, with the entire election process scheduled to be completed by October 31.
The Election Commission announced the elections following the completion of the terms of sitting members in the respective constituencies. The elections cover four seats in Karnataka, along with vacancies in Bihar, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.
Security arrangements have been strengthened at polling stations to ensure peaceful voting, while election officials are monitoring the process.
