Declare Telangana drought-hit state, release Rs. 25,000 cr: CPI's Kunamneni

Khammam, Nov 3 (UNI) CPI Telangana State Secretary and Kothagudem MLA Kunamneni Sambasiva Rao on Tuesday demanded that Telangana be declared a drought-affected State and urged the Centre to immediately release Rs. 25,000 crore for drought mitigation and relief measures.
A CPI delegation led by Kunamneni visited drought-affected villages, including Tanikella and Konijerla in Konijerla mandal of Khammam district, and inspected dry agricultural fields, depleted water bodies and crops damaged by extreme heat. Interacting with farmers, he expressed concern over the rainfall deficit and the impact of El Niño on agriculture.
Addressing a press conference at Tanikella, he said paddy cultivation had declined from 69.19 lakh acres during last year's Kharif season to 57.04 lakh acres this year. He demanded compensation for farmers who could not undertake cultivation, rescheduling of agricultural loans and a special assessment of drought-hit villages.
He also sought compensation of Rs. 30,000 per acre for paddy and Rs. 50,000 per acre for commercial crops for tenant farmers, besides special drought funds for gram panchayats, increased employment guarantee workdays, drinking water and cattle fodder arrangements.
Kunamneni urged all political parties to set aside differences and work together to tackle the drought situation. He also demanded uninterrupted power supply to protect standing crops and action against black marketing of essential commodities, besides distribution of 14 essential commodities through ration shops.
CPI farmers' union leaders and other party representatives accompanied the delegation.
