Kishan Reddy accuses Congress of double standards on democratic rights

Hyderabad, Oct 11 (UNI) union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy on Sunday accused the Congress of adopting double standards on democratic rights, alleging that the party which advocates freedom of protest in Delhi was restricting opposition activities in Telangana.
In a statement, he alleged that BJP leaders, including state president N. Ramchander Rao, had repeatedly been placed under house arrest or prevented from holding protests and raising public issues under the Congress government in Telangana.
Referring to BJP protests over fee reimbursement arrears, farmers' issues, recruitment and land records, Kishan Reddy alleged that the government had imposed restrictions and denied permissions to several demonstrations.
He said the opposition had the responsibility to question the government over the implementation of its electoral promises, including the six guarantees, and demanded that the Congress ensure the same democratic freedoms in Telangana that it sought in Delhi.
Reacting to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's description of Indian democracy as “muzzled”, Kishan Reddy recalled the Emergency imposed in 1975 and accused the Congress of suppressing civil liberties and press freedom during that period.
He said democracy should be upheld through actions in government rather than speeches and urged the Telangana government to respect the rights of opposition parties to protest and question its policies.
