Stalin cites Keralam gtg power at lower tariff, alleges corruption in power purchase at high rates by ruling TVK, demands Independent probe

Chennai, Nov 4 (UNI) Alleging corruption in purchase of power from private players at exorbitant rates by the ruling TVK headed by Vijay, Opposition DMK President M.K.Stalin demanded a probe by an Independent and transparent authority to bring the truth to light.
Citing power purchased by the Keralam government at lower rates, he sought know why the TVK government could not purchase at that rates.
Referring a report published in an English daily on the Kerala government sacking KSEB Chairman M.G.Rajamaickam for purchasing power at Rs 14.50 per unit during peak and bringing it down to 12.50 per unit from Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board (HPSEB) despite a private power generator coming forward to supply 500 MW power round the clock at 8.645 per unit, the DMK leader said "there is a lesson for us in this news".
At a time when Tamil Nadu Electricity, Law and Prisons Minister CTR.Nirmal Kumar has been talking about the TVK government purchasing power at Rs.35, Rs.37 and Rs.41.50 per unit, the issue of having purchased power at much lower rates of Rs.14.50, Rs.12.50 per unit has become a controversy in Keralam resulting in the removal of the KSEB Chairman.
The more important fact is that at a time when a private firm approached the Keralam government offering to supply 500 MW power at Rs 8.645 per unit, it was controversially rejected by the KSEB Chairman following which he was sacked from the post.
"Our (the DMK's) question is when Keralam can get power at Rs 8.645, Rs 12.50 and Rs.14.50, why was it not possible for the ruling TVK", Stalin sought to know, and alleged massive coruption in purchase of by the Vijay government at higher rates.
Demanding questioning of all those involved in this deal, he said since the DVAC was under the control of the Electricity and Law Minister, the truth would not come out and that an independent and transparent Commission should probe it.
According to the Keralam newspaper reports, in September, amid mounting protests over unscheduled power cuts, Rajamanickam had negotiated an arrangement with the HPSEB to procure electricity at Rs14.50 per unit during peak hours. Keralam began receiving power under the arrangement on October 1, helping it tide over the shortage. Subsequent negotiations reportedly brought the rate down to 12.50 per unit.
Meanwhile, a private power generator approached the government with an offer to supply 500 MW round the clock at Rs 8.645 per unit through General Network Access (GNA), a framework facilitating interstate power transmission. This had led to differences over the most economical and practical option for meeting the state’s electricity requirements.
Rajamanickam was learnt to have opposed replacing the Himachal Pradesh arrangement with the GNA proposal, arguing that the two offers could not be compared merely on the basis of the per-unit tariff, leading to his sacking. His abrupt removal as KSEB chairman
at a time when Keralam is grappling with power crisis has raised questions whether differences over a controversial power purchase proposal played a role in the decision, the reports said.
