Yediyurappa seeks CM’s resignation after NDA’s MLC sweep, calls for fresh mandate

Bengaluru, Oct 28 (UNI) Senior BJP leader and former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Wednesday demanded the resignation of Chief Minister DK Shivakumar following the BJP-JD(S) alliance’s clean sweep of all four Legislative Council seats, challenging the Congress government to seek a fresh mandate.
Mounting pressure on the ruling Congress after the electoral setback, Yediyurappa said the NDA’s victory in the teachers’ and graduates’ constituencies had raised serious questions about the government’s moral authority to continue in office.
“The NDA candidates have won by a huge margin though we are not in power in Karnataka. What moral right do you have to continue after losing these polls? If you have any dignity, you need to step down and seek a fresh mandate,” he said at a press conference here.
He also challenged Shivakumar to a public debate on the electoral verdict, arguing that teachers and graduates who formed the electorate in these constituencies had delivered a decisive message against the Congress government.
Seeking to elevate the results beyond a contest for four Council seats, the BJP veteran described the outcome as an indication of the political direction of Karnataka and predicted a thumping victory for the BJP-JD(S) alliance in the next Assembly elections.
In a pointed attack on the Congress over its allegations concerning electronic voting machines (EVMs), Yediyurappa noted that ballot papers were used in the Council elections, questioning the party’s stand on the credibility of the electoral process.
He said the electorate in the teachers’ and graduates’ constituencies had delivered its verdict despite the BJP-JD(S) alliance being out of power in the state, adding that the results reflected dissatisfaction with the Congress administration.
Yediyurappa also targeted the government over Shivakumar’s reported remarks to sugarcane growers that it did not have adequate financial resources to meet their demands.
The former Chief Minister described the statement as an admission of financial distress and questioned how public funds had been utilised during the Congress government’s three-and-a-half-year tenure.
“Where did the taxpayers’ money go?” he asked, alleging large-scale corruption and asserting that the government had forfeited its moral right to remain in office.
The BJP leader’s demand comes amid renewed political sparring following the NDA’s victory in all four Council constituencies, with the Opposition seeking to turn the results into a broader indictment of the Congress government.
While the elections were confined to teachers’ and graduates’ constituencies, Yediyurappa sought to portray the outcome as a wider political signal ahead of the next Assembly polls, asserting that the BJP-JD(S) alliance was poised to challenge the Congress more decisively in the state.
