Yediyurappa, Deve Gowda discuss alliance expansion

Bengaluru, Oct 30 (UNI) Former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa and former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda on Friday held detailed discussions on strengthening the BJP-JD(S) alliance and evolving a joint strategy to take on the Congress, days after the two parties swept all four seats in the recent Karnataka Legislative Council elections.
The meeting, held at Deve Gowda's residence in Padmanabhanagar here, assumes significance as the BJP and JD(S) look to build on their electoral success and extend their partnership to forthcoming Zilla Panchayat and Taluk Panchayat elections.
The NDA's clean sweep in the four Graduate and Teachers' constituencies has provided fresh political momentum to the alliance, with the two leaders discussing the state's political developments, the functioning of the Congress government and the opposition's future course.
Emerging from the meeting, Yediyurappa said both leaders favoured closer political coordination to dislodge the Congress government.
"Deve Gowda is also unhappy with the current Congress government's administration and has expressed the opinion that we should all work together to remove this government from power as soon as possible. His suggestions are in line with my opinion as well," he said.
Yediyurappa said they had discussed various issues for more than half an hour.
Signalling the possibility of extending the alliance to grassroots-level electoral battles, he said there was a likelihood of the BJP and JD(S) contesting the Zilla Panchayat and Taluk Panchayat elections together.
A detailed discussion with JD(S) leaders, including union Minister H D Kumaraswamy, would be held before taking a final decision.
He said the broader decision on strengthening the alliance would rest with the top leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, union Home Minister Amit Shah and Deve Gowda.
"I am confident that Deve Gowda will hold talks with the Prime Minister and move forward to further strengthen the alliance. We all need to fight together and move forward politically in Karnataka," he said.
Yediyurappa also launched a sharp attack on the Congress government, accusing it of being preoccupied with internal power struggles instead of addressing people's concerns.
Referring to the reported leadership uncertainty and repeated visits by Congress leaders to Delhi, he said the situation within the ruling party was unpredictable. However, he said it was too early to speculate on a change of Chief Minister or mid-term elections.
Alleging that Karnataka was facing an unprecedented economic and administrative crisis, he questioned the government's financial management and claimed it was struggling even to arrange fuel for government transport buses.
He accused the Congress of neglecting the concerns of farmers, workers, the poor and ordinary citizens while focusing on internal disputes and political controversies.
The meeting is seen as an effort by the BJP and JD(S) to translate their recent electoral success into a broader political offensive against the Congress in Karnataka.
