He said 70 specialised units for women’s and children’s safety were operational, with a target of 270. In five months, they registered 288 cases, conducted 41,915 awareness programmes, traced 49 missing women and 87 missing children, prevented 41 child marriages, helped 63 school dropouts return to education and rescued 96 persons with intellectual disabilities.
A dedicated WhatsApp reporting facility for women was also introduced.
To improve police station functioning and promote integrity, the Tamil Nadu government increased monthly contingency funds for light, medium and heavy police stations from Rs 350 to Rs 30,000, Rs 6,000 to Rs 20,000, and Rs 8,250 to Rs 50,000, respectively.
The government issued the order on October 21. A three-day behavioural training programme aimed at improving police personnel’s treatment of complainants has trained around 77,000 personnel, with ₹8.85 crore allocated.
Aggarwal said a police well-being programme launched in association with NIMHANS had identified around 15,000 personnel requiring mental health, addiction and suicide-prevention support, with assistance extended to 7,000 personnel.
He also highlighted streamlined foot patrols to improve public interaction and grievance redressal.
A rehabilitation initiative in Chennai has identified 6,813 destitute persons, provided shelter to 4,700 and reunited more than 1,000 with their families, besides facilitating medical treatment. Aggarwal stressed the importance of sharing best practices among southern States to strengthen policing and public safety.
