Skill Kerala to train 10,000 students in 70-plus courses across 17 emerging technology domains: PK Kunhalikutty

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 13 (UNI) Kerala will provide fully government-funded training to 10,000 students in more than 70 courses across 17 emerging technology domains under the Skill Kerala programme, aimed at equipping young people with industry-relevant skills and transforming them into entrepreneurs and innovators.
Inaugurating the 'Skill Kerala – Emerging Technology Skilling Programme' here, Minister P.K. Kunhalikutty said academic degrees alone were no longer sufficient and that students with innovative ideas could achieve remarkable results if equipped with quality skill development opportunities.
The initiative, being implemented across higher education institutions in the state under the Chief Minister's 100-day action plan, will offer training without imposing any financial burden on students or educational institutions. It will also include faculty development programmes and industry-linked workshops, besides certification in collaboration with the industrial sector.
The programme is being implemented under the 'Accelerate Kerala' initiative led by the ICT Academy of Kerala.
Kunhalikutty stressed that the government and universities must work together to harness the vast opportunities offered by emerging technologies and create an environment in which young people could develop their capabilities without having to leave the state in search of suitable opportunities.
Young people were closely observing changes in the information technology sector, and once they became confident that they could acquire advanced skills and build their careers in Kerala, their potential would be immense, he said.
He also called for a change in the approach towards university campuses, saying they should not be viewed merely as places for confrontations and clashes. The younger generation, particularly Gen Z, would distance itself from such activities, making it necessary for political leaders to adapt to the changing educational environment.
Any government could progress only by respecting the aspirations and sentiments of young people, he added.
The minister said the Skill Kerala programme represented a joint mission of the government and universities to tap the potential of emerging technologies and prepare students for the evolving employment and entrepreneurial landscape.
Higher Education and Social Justice Minister Roji M. John launched the programme's portal at a function held at Hilton Garden Inn here.
ICT Academy of Kerala CEO Muraleedharan Manningal delivered the welcome address.
State Electronics and Information Technology Department Special Secretary Sreeram Sambasiva Rao, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technological University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ciza Thomas, and directors, deans and principals of various higher education institutions across the state attended the function.
