AP: Heavy rains in Visakhapatnam, trees uprooted disrupting traffic

Visakhapatnam, Oct 27 (UNI) Heavy rains accompanied by gusty gales battered Visakhapatnam district under the influence of the cyclonic storm Arnab on Tuesday throwing normal life out of gear.
Several trees were uprooted at various places in the city snapping the electric wires resulting in several localities being plunged into darkness due to power failure.
Giant waves in the sea caused concern. Incessant rains occurred in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Anakapalle and Manyam districts as well. The district official machinery was put on high alert and all required measures were taken to ensure there would be no loss of life in the district.
The total rainfall recorded from 8.30 am to 2.30 PM on Tuesday was 68.9MM in ten mandals in Visakhapatnam district. District Collector Abhisikth Kishore is reviewing the situation from time to time with the officials. The officials as a precautionary measure closed all the beaches in the district. All the educational institutions and Anganwadis declared holiday for two days.
The command control room at the Collectorate is operating 24 hours a day. The NDRF and SDRF teams were kept ready to swing into action if necessary.
In Anakapalli district, heavy rain and winds disrupted normal life. Uprooted trees fell across the NH 16 at Regupalem village of Yelamanchili mandal disrupting vehicular traffic between Anakapalli and Tuni. The patrolling staff removed the uprooted trees and cleared the traffic.
No cyclone related casualties have been reported from anywhere in the north AP districts. Home Minister V Anitha reviewed the situation with Anakapalle district Superintendent Thuin Sinha, district Collector and other officials.
A Machilipatnam report said that 273 relief centres have been set up to shift people living in low-lying areas. Meanwhile, the South Coastal Railway division cancelled 53 trains.
