Three arrested for poisoning tigress, 4 cubs

Mysuru, June 28 (UNI) The forest and police officials have cracked the sensational MM Hills case, arresting three individuals for poisoning the big cats.
The accused — Mada alias Maduraju, Konappa and Nagaraju — confessed to lacing the carcass of a cow with pesticide in an act of revenge, after a tigress allegedly killed their cow ‘Kenchi’.
Forest and police teams revealed that the tigress and her four cubs consumed the poisoned meat and died shortly thereafter in the Meenyam forest area within the Hoogyam range. Forest officials discovered the carcasses during patrolling on June 26, prompting a statewide outcry.
Following the confession, police have dropped charges against Maduraju’s father, Shivanna, who had earlier falsely taken the blame in a bid to protect his son. Maduraju, who initially absconded after the incident, was tracked down and arrested in Koppa village.
The state government has now stepped up the probe, appointing Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (APCCF) and Nodal Officer for All India Tiger Estimation Kumar Pushkar to head the investigation, replacing the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests.
The team also includes Chief Forest Conservator T Hiralal, APCCF Srinivasulu, NTCA representative Malleshappa, Mysuru Zoo’s veterinary officer Dr. Shashidhar, and noted wildlife expert Sanjay Gubbi.
Expressing grief, Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre said, "Karnataka stands second in tiger population with 563 tigers. The death of a tigress and her cubs is a huge blow to our conservation efforts."
The MM Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, covering 906 sq km, is home to rich biodiversity, including tigers, elephants and leopards.
