Kamboj turns ODI debut disappointment into match-winning comeback, scripts record spell

Auckland, Nov 4 (UNI) An expensive ODI debut could have dented a young fast bowler's confidence, but Anshul Kamboj responded in emphatic fashion, turning his early setback into an opportunity to announce himself on the international stage with a record-equalling spell against New Zealand in the opening ODI here on Wednesday.
The 25-year-old Haryana pacer, who had endured a difficult introduction to one-day international cricket against the West Indies, produced a vastly improved performance against the Black Caps, returning figures of two for 22 in his full quota of 10 overs to play a decisive role in India's five-wicket victory.
His disciplined effort, which included 46 dot balls, earned him the Player of the Match award and underlined his ability to bounce back from disappointment.
Kamboj's economy rate of 2.20 was particularly impressive on a surface where New Zealand's batsmen struggled to build momentum against India's disciplined bowling attack. His figures also placed him among the most economical 10-over spells by an Indian fast bowler in recent ODI history.
Rather than chasing wickets, Kamboj concentrated on maintaining pressure through consistent line and length, making it difficult for the New Zealand batsmen to score freely. His use of the wobble-seam delivery proved particularly effective, helping him extract movement and keep the batsmen guessing.
The Haryana pacer dismissed Mitchell Santner and Nathan Smith to finish with two wickets, complementing Arshdeep Singh's four-wicket haul and helping India restrict New Zealand to 185.
What made the performance more significant was the manner in which Kamboj responded to his previous outing. Having conceded 82 runs on his ODI debut against the West Indies, he demonstrated composure and maturity to deliver a spell that was as much about control as it was about wicket-taking.
His performance also offered India a promising pace-bowling option as the team looks to build depth in its bowling resources.
While Virat Kohli's commanding 74 laid the foundation for India's successful chase, Kamboj's contribution with the ball had ensured that the visitors were chasing a manageable target.
For Kamboj, the Auckland outing was more than just a match-winning performance. It was a timely statement that one difficult beginning need not define an international career.
