Uthappa, Dilip join MI coaching setup; Rohit likely to return as captain

Mumbai, Oct 30 (UNI) Mumbai Indians have unveiled a revamped coaching team for IPL 2027, bringing in Robin Uthappa as batting coach, T Dilip as fielding coach and former players Mitchell McClenaghan and Dhawal Kulkarni to oversee the bowling department.

Former New Zealand quick McClenaghan has been named bowling coach, while Kulkarni will take charge as development bowling coach. All four appointments bring former players into the franchise’s support staff.

The changes follow MI’s decision to part ways with Lasith Malinga, Paras Mhambrey and Carl Hopkinson. Malinga had been the team's bowling coach since IPL 2024, while Hopkinson was in charge of fielding.
Uthappa, who played for MI in the inaugural IPL season in 2008, will take up his first coaching role in the league. He retired from the IPL after the 2022 season and was traded to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in exchange for Zaheer Khan after his stint with Mumbai.

McClenaghan was an important part of MI’s title-winning campaigns in 2015, 2017 and 2019, taking 71 wickets in 56 matches. He was also part of the squad that defended the title in 2020. He later served as bowling coach of MI Emirates during their title-winning ILT20 campaign in 2024.

Dilip joins after nearly five years with the Indian men’s team, where he was part of three ICC title-winning campaigns — the 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cups and the 2025 Champions Trophy. He will reunite with former India captain Rohit Sharma at MI.
Kulkarni, meanwhile, represented Mumbai Indians in their first six IPL seasons and was part of the 2013 title-winning side. He returned for the 2020 and 2021 seasons and also played for Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Lions.

There are also growing speculations of Rohit, highly likely to take charge of the franchise once again in IPL 2027. Rohit, who led the franchise to five titles, is expected to take over from Hardik Pandya, under whom the franchise struggled in the past few seasons.

Mumbai had reportedly considered replacing Pandya with Rohit midway through last season when the team was struggling, but the leadership change is now expected to take place ahead of the December 16 mini-auction.
