Railways 184 all out, TN 71 for 3 in Ranji tie

Chennai, Oct 26 (UNI) After bowling out Railways for 184, hosts Tamil Nadu were 71 for three at stumps on the opening day of the third round of the Elite Group-D Ranji Trophy cricket tournament at the M.A.Chidambaram Stadium here on Monday.
It was a day dominated by the bowlers as 13 wickets fell, with the pacers calling the shots in the morning on a dicey pitch which was under cover for the last 3-4 days due to heavy rains, and the spinners too joining the wicket taking act as the day progressed.
Amid overcast conditions with a possible rain threat, Tamil Nadu won the crucial toss for the second time, and expectedly asked Railways to bat first.
Their decision soon paid dividends as medium pacer Sonu Yadav breathed fire. He made full use of the moisture in the wicket, tormented the Railways top order with bounce, pace and movement.
Sonu cleaned up the top order with a triple strike, before skipper and leftarm spinner Sai Kishore too started striking in tandem as Railways were reducedto 51 for six.
Barring number.8 batsman Zubair Ali's breezy 75 (121 balls, 7x4, 4x6), the lone significant run contributor, Railways avoided total detailment, recovering from 123 for nine in 40.2 overs, to 184 all out in 43.3 overs. Zubair, who used the long handle effectively, was
the last man dismissed. He also ensured a decent total giving a chance for the bowlers to defend it.
For the home team, Sonu Yadav and Sai Kishore claimed three wickets, while offie Jeganathan Hemachudeshan took two wickets.
In reply, Tamil Nadu got off to a shaky, with opener Vimal Kumar's lean run continuing as he was dismissed for a second duck in as many matches. Lefthander N.Jagadeesan (30) and last match centurion Pradosh Ranjan Paul (19) steadied the innings, but their exit in quick succession pegged the innings back as the home team were sturggling at 55 for three.
Both Jagadeesn and Pradosh Ranjan were dismissed by off-spinner Toufik Uddin Mondal who got good assistance from the wicket.
However, Baba Indrajith (13 not out) and C.Andre Siddarth (8 not out) ensured that there were no further alarm bells as TN finished the day at 71 for three in 25 overs, still 113 runs adrift of the Railways' total.
With the rains abating and the sun coming out, the home team batters would be keen to consolidate the position to post a big total and secure a sizeable first innings lead.
