Sood invites Mirabai Chanu to help shape Delhi’s sports vision

New Delhi, Sep 30 (UNI) Delhi Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Ashish Sood on Wednesday met Olympic medallist and Asian Games silver medallist Mirabai Chanu and invited the celebrated weightlifter to contribute to the government’s plans for strengthening sports infrastructure and developing young talent in the national capital.
Sood congratulated Chanu on winning the silver medal in the women’s 49kg weightlifting event at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, where she lifted a combined 198 kg. Her performance ended India’s 28-year wait for a weightlifting medal at the Asian Games, with the previous one having been won by Karnam Malleswari at the 1998 Bangkok Games.
During the meeting, Sood discussed the Delhi government’s proposal to establish state-of-the-art Sports Centres of Excellence and sought Chanu’s association in developing and guiding the proposed facilities.
