New Delhi, Oct 24 (UNI) Double gold medallists Mona Agarwal and Nishad Kumar led India’s contingent as flag-bearers at a glitteringar closing ceremony of the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Para Games on Saturday, bringing the curtain down on a campaign in which the country achieved its best-ever finish at the continental event.
Held at the Mizuho Park Athletics Stadium in Nagoya, the ceremony marked the end of a week-long competition that brought together approximately 4,000 athletes and staff from 45 countries and regions. Japan hosted the Asian Para Games for the first time, with the event celebrating the achievements of para-athletes across a range of disciplines.
India finished fourth in the final medal standings with 114 medals, comprising 30 gold, 35 silver and 49 bronze. Both the overall tally and the fourth-place finish were the country's best across the five editions of the Asian Para Games.
The haul surpassed India's previous best of 108 medals, including 27 gold, at the 2022 edition in Hangzhou. The latest achievement was particularly significant given that India fielded a 168-member athlete contingent, considerably smaller than the 309 athletes who represented the country in Hangzhou.
India's campaign was marked by world-record performances, historic victories and strong results across multiple disciplines. Para-athletics was a major contributor, with Indian athletes collecting 65 medals, 12 more than at the previous edition. The contingent also enjoyed notable success in badminton, shooting, archery, swimming and other events.
India entered the final day in fourth place, but their position remained under threat from South Korea, who needed two more gold medals to match India’s tally of 30. South Korea's higher number of silver medals meant they could have moved ahead had they drawn level on gold. India ultimately secured a historic fourth-place finish.
China topped the overall standings with a commanding 435 medals, including 207 gold, 117 silver and 111 bronze. Hosts Japan finished second with 186 medals — 64 gold, 60 silver and 62 bronze, while Uzbekistan secured third place with 145 medals, comprising 45 gold, 49 silver and 51 bronze.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi praised the athletes for their performances and determination as the Games came to a close.
In a post on social media, Takaichi said the competitors had embraced the possibility of failure, believed in themselves and pushed their limits on the continental stage. She also highlighted the spirit of the competition, praising athletes for supporting their teammates, persevering in pursuit of victory and applauding the efforts of their rivals.
Takaichi expressed hope that Japan's athletes would build on their performances at the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games and the next Asian Para Games, scheduled to be held in Doha, Qatar, in 2030.
The Asian Para Games originated from the Far East and South Pacific Games Federation for the Disabled, with the inaugural edition held in Guangzhou, China, in 2010. Aichi-Nagoya hosted the fifth edition of the continental competition, continuing its role as a major platform for para-athletes across Asia.
With the conclusion of the Games in Japan, attention now turns to Doha, which will host the sixth edition in 2030.
