MCA feud leaves Meghalaya Ranji players in limbo

Shillong, Nov 4 (UNI) An administrative power struggle within the Meghalaya Cricket Association (MCA) has left a group of Ranji Trophy cricketers in uncertainty, with players who represented the state in the first three rounds suddenly finding themselves sidelined following a court-ordered change in the association's leadership dispute.
The upheaval has raised questions over players' security, team selection procedures and the impact of cricket administration disputes on domestic careers, after the original Meghalaya squad was replaced overnight ahead of its fourth-round Plate League encounter against Nagaland.
The displaced players, who had continued training until the eve of the match, were informed that they would no longer be part of the team after the BCCI registered a fresh squad following the Meghalaya High Court's ruling in favour of MCA president James Sangma.
The abrupt change left the original players without clarity on their participation in the remaining Ranji Trophy fixtures or other domestic competitions.
The new team, led by former Punjab opener Jiwanjot Singh, was assembled at short notice, with guest professionals Srinivas Sharath and Akshay Karnewar also brought in for the match.
The lack of preparation was reflected in the team's performance, as Meghalaya were bowled out for 144 in response to Nagaland's 254. Only Akash Choudhary among the new squad members had played a red-ball match this season.
The developments followed the Meghalaya High Court's decision to uphold the suspension of MCA secretary Rayonald Kharkamni and invalidate resolutions and team selections made by the rival Apex Council faction.
Kharkamni's suspension followed complaints that he had failed to act on sexual harassment allegations raised by players of the state's Under-23 women's team earlier this year.
The Meghalaya episode is not an isolated case in the Northeast. Arunachal Pradesh had forfeited its opening-round Ranji Trophy match against Nagaland following an internal dispute within its cricket association, prompting the BCCI to constitute a three-member committee headed by Khairul Majumdar to oversee team selections.
The latest developments have brought the vulnerability of domestic cricketers to administrative disputes into focus, with the immediate future of Meghalaya's displaced players remaining uncertain.
