Nairobi awarded 2029 World Athletics Championships, Munich gets 2031

New Delhi, Sep 15 (UNI) Nairobi will make history in 2029 by becoming the first African city to host the World Athletics Championships, with Munich awarded the 2031 edition, World Athletics has announced.

The decision was taken at the 242nd World Athletics Council Meeting in Budapest, with Nairobi beating Rome, Munich and London for the 2029 event. Munich will host the championships two years later at its Olympic Stadium.

“We were fortunate to have four outstanding bids for 2029 and 2031, and this was not an easy decision for the Council," said World Athletics President Sebastian Coe. "The quality, ambition and commitment demonstrated by all four candidates underline the strength and global appeal of the World Athletics Championships.

“With this Council decision today, we continue to fulfil our mission of growing athletics worldwide with the hosting of our World Athletics Championships in Asia, Africa and
Europe over its next three editions.

“Nairobi and Munich ultimately presented two compelling propositions. They offer very different but equally exciting opportunities for our sport, and I am delighted that we can now begin working with both cities to stage two world-class championships,” Coe added.

Africa has previously hosted several major athletics events, including the 2017 World Cross Country Championships in Kampala and the World U18 Championships in Nairobi. Botswana’s Gaborone hosted the World Athletics Relays earlier this year, the first edition of the event in Africa.
However, Nairobi 2029 will mark the continent’s first hosting of athletics’ biggest global championship outside the Olympics.
“Nairobi presented a compelling and emotional bid, and taking the World Athletics Championships to Africa for the first time will be historic,” Coe said.

Kenya is the second-most successful nation in World Championships history, with its athletics legacy featuring stars such as Faith Kipyegon, Eliud Kipchoge and David Rudisha. Germany will host the championships for the third time in 2031 after Stuttgart in 1993 and Berlin in 2009.

The next edition will be held in Beijing from September 10-19, 2027, while both Nairobi and Munich will stage their championships in September.
