Samson joins India's 1,000-run T20I opener club

New Delhi, Sep 15 (UNI) Sanju Samson may have spent much of his India career battling for a permanent place, but his numbers at the top of the order are beginning to tell a very different story.
The Kerala batsman has now crossed the 1,000-run mark as an opener for India in T20Is, joining an exclusive list that includes Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan and Abhishek Sharma.
What makes Samson's achievement particularly striking is not just the volume of runs, but the manner in which he has scored them. His 1,026 runs have come at a staggering strike rate of 181.59, with boundaries accounting for 29.73 per cent of his scoring.
Only Abhishek Sharma, who has 1,726 runs at an extraordinary strike rate of 191.56, has scored faster among India's 1,000-plus-run T20I openers.
At the other end of the spectrum is Rohit, India's leading T20I opener with 3,750 runs at a strike rate of 143.02. KL Rahul has 1,826 runs at 136.98, while Dhawan amassed 1,759 at 126.36.
The numbers offer a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of India's T20 batting. Rohit, Rahul and Dhawan built their reputations as prolific run-makers at the top, while Samson and Abhishek represent a newer, more attacking template in which the boundary is not merely a scoring option but a central part of the strategy.
For Samson, however, the milestone carries an added significance. Despite possessing the explosive game to match the demands of modern T20 cricket, he has often found himself in and out of India's playing XI.
Now, with more than 1,000 runs as an opener and a strike rate touching 182, Samson's numbers make a compelling case for what he can bring when given a sustained opportunity at the top.
In a format increasingly defined by intent and tempo, Samson is showing that his biggest weapon may not simply be his ability to score runs — but how quickly he can change the course of an innings.
