Samson answers selection buzz as India seal T20I series against Afghanistan

New Delhi, Sep 15 (UNI) Sanju Samson answered the questions over his place in India's T20I batting order in emphatic fashion, smashing a breathtaking 57 off just 22 balls to power the hosts to a seven-wicket demolition of Afghanistan in the second T20I at the Arun Jaitley Stadium here on Tuesday.
With speculation swirling around Samson's place following the emergence of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the Kerala batsman responded with an explosive innings that came at a staggering strike rate of 259.09, studded with seven fours and four sixes.
Samson's assault, alongside Abhishek Sharma's 39 off 19 balls, helped India chase down Afghanistan's 159 for eight in just 14.5 overs to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
The opening pair launched India's chase into overdrive, adding 88 runs from only 38 balls. India raced to 82 without loss in the powerplay, leaving Afghanistan's bowlers struggling to contain the onslaught.
Samson brought up his 50 in spectacular fashion before Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan finally ended his stay at the crease. Rashid dismissed Abhishek for 39 and then removed Samson for 57 in the same over, but the damage had already been done.
Ishan Kishan then ensured there was no late twist, remaining unbeaten on 38 off 23 balls, while Tilak Varma finished on 15 not out as India reached 163 for three with 31 deliveries to spare.
Earlier, Afghanistan had posted 159 for eight after being asked to bat, with captain Ibrahim Zadran making 37 off 33 balls, Darwish Rasooli scoring 26 off 15 and Rashid Khan hitting 28 off 16.
Nitish Kumar Reddy led India's bowling effort with three for 24 from three overs, while Arshdeep Singh claimed two for 35. Jasprit Bumrah, Axar Patel and Ravi Bishnoi took a wicket each.
Rashid finished with three for 36 but was unable to prevent India's ruthless chase.
For Samson, the innings was more than just a match-winning knock—it was a powerful statement at a time when competition for India's opening slots is intensifying.
