Alcaraz beats Sinner to lift first Italian Open crown

Rome, May 18 (UNI) Spain's Carlos Alcaraz produced a scintillating performance to defeat local favourite and world number one Jannik Sinner 7-6(5), 6-1 in the final of the Italian Open here on Sunday, clinching his third title of the 2025 season.
The 22-year-old Alcaraz, ranked No. 2, has now beaten Sinner in their last four meetings, extending his head-to-head advantage to 7-4. It also ended Sinner’s 26-match unbeaten run, which stretched back to his loss to Alcaraz in the 2024 China Open final.
Appearing in his first tournament since lifting the Australian Open trophy in January, Sinner was aiming to become the first Italian since Adriano Panatta in 1976 to win the Rome Masters. But the Spaniard dashed those hopes with a dominant display, particularly in the second set, to claim his seventh ATP Masters 1000 title.
The opening set saw a high-quality contest on the packed Campo Centrale, with both players thrilling the Foro Italico fans. Alcaraz failed to convert a breakpoint in the fifth game, while Sinner squandered two crucial chances late in the set. The Spaniard rallied in the tiebreak, surging to a 3-0 lead before sealing it 7-5 with two aces and some fearless baseline play.
Alcaraz then shifted gears in the second set, breaking Sinner twice to race to a 5-0 lead. The match concluded in just one hour and 45 minutes, with Sinner suffering his first straight-set loss in 94 matches. Alcaraz also became the first player to notch 30 match wins this season.
"I’m just really happy to get my first Rome title, hopefully it’s not going to be the last one," Alcaraz said after the match. "I’m proud of myself, with the way I approached the match mentally. Tactically, I think I played pretty well from the first point until the last one."
