Environmental activists reach Karjat to protest tree felling for torrent power project

Raigad, Oct 26 (UNI) The felling of trees in Karjat taluka of Raigad district for a power project undertaken by Torrent Power has triggered concern among environmentalists, with activists from different parts of Maharashtra arriving in the area to oppose the destruction of green cover and raise awareness about the need to protect the environment.
The issue gained attention after videos showing tree felling in the area went viral on social media. The visuals sparked reactions from conservation activists and nature lovers, many of whom expressed their opposition to the large-scale cutting of trees for the project. Following the circulation of the videos, environmentalists have come forward to highlight the importance of preserving the region's green cover and protecting its natural surroundings.
Several environmental activists and concerned citizens have travelled to Karjat from different parts of the state to register their protest against the ongoing tree felling. Their presence reflects growing public concern over the environmental impact of infrastructure and power projects, particularly when they involve the removal of trees.
The protest has also drawn attention to the broader question of how development projects should be implemented while minimising their impact on nature. Environmentalists have emphasised the importance of responsible development and the need to ensure that tree felling is addressed with appropriate environmental safeguards and compensatory plantation measures.
The campaign in Karjat has brought together concerned citizens around a common cause: protecting trees and preserving the natural environment. With videos of the tree felling gaining traction on social media, the issue has moved beyond the local area, prompting environmental advocates from across Maharashtra to express solidarity with the campaign.
While the tree-plantation drive represents a constructive response by citizens, the long-term environmental impact of the project and the effectiveness of compensatory plantation will depend on the protection and survival of the newly planted trees.
The developments in Karjat have once again highlighted the tension between infrastructure development and environmental conservation, with activists urging greater attention to the ecological consequences of large-scale projects.
