Jalna: Revenue dept cancels order exempting Jarange associate from Rs 4.90 crore penalty for illegal sand excavation

Jalna, Sep 28 (UNI) The Revenue Department has cancelled a revised order that had exempted Sanjay Nanasaheb Katare, a close associate of Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange, from a penalty of Rs 4.90 crore imposed in connection with alleged illegal sand excavation from the Godavari riverbed in Ambad taluka.
Ambad Sub-Divisional Officer Umakant Pardhi cancelled the revised order, restoring the original penalty order.
Consequently, the financial charge on land bearing Gat No. 265 will remain in force, officials said.
The case relates to purported illegal excavation of around 2,000 brass of sand from the Godavari riverbed at Asht Pimpalgaon and Domalgaon villages.
A joint team comprising a talathi and a circle officer conducted a panchnama on March 24, 2023.
Based on the panchnama, the then tehsildar had imposed a cumulative penalty of Rs 4,90,72,200 on 18 persons under the Maharashtra Land Revenue Code. The amount was also secured by imposing a charge on their immovable properties.
The action was initiated under Rules 48(7) and 48(8) of the Maharashtra Land Revenue Code, 1966, concerning illegal excavation of minor minerals and recovery of penalties.
A subsequent revised order was issued by the then tehsildar which excluded Katare from the penal proceedings.
The Ambad SDO has now cancelled that revised order, thereby restoring the original action.
The development is being viewed as a setback for Jarange's associate, as the original penalty and the corresponding charge on the property will continue to remain in force.
