Maha: Tension grips Mumbai as police crackdown on CJP’s anti-establishment protest; activist Anjali Damania detained

Mumbai, Oct 11 (UNI) Tension gripped parts of Mumbai today as the Mumbai Police mounted a heavy security blanket around the iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Park (T Junction) to thwart a planned demonstration by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP).
The protest was called by the CJP in sharp escalation against the massive police crackdown and detention of thousands of activists in Delhi a day prior, and to press for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Anticipating a flashpoint, authorities turned the Shivaji Park neighborhood into a virtual garrison, deploying heavy police contingents and barricades across key access routes. Preemptive police action began ahead of the scheduled protest, with several party workers and prominent social activist Anjali Damania being detained by law enforcement agencies before they could reach the designated venue.
Reacting strongly to the statewide clampdown, CJP leader Ajinkya Shinde launched a blistering attack on the central leadership, accusing them of pushing the nation toward authoritarianism.
In a statement, Shinde said the mass detentions of citizens across India have sparked widespread public outrage and warned that the government's suppression of peaceful dissent would be met with expanded protests nationwide. He reiterated demands for the immediate ouster of CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
Meanwhile, the police action drew sharp political criticism locally. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Sandeep Deshpande rushed to the site and questioned the role of local authorities. Deshpande alleged that police were acting at the behest of political superiors, claiming that local festival committee heads were being co-opted to orchestrate friction against CJP cadres. Declaring unequivocal support for those fighting to uphold democratic rights, Deshpande condemned the heavy-handed approach of the administration.
Police officials maintained that stringent security measures were necessary to maintain public order and prevent any unauthorized assembly, as detentions of protesters and local functionaries continued into the evening.
