Minor rescued from prostitution racket in Mumbai, two held for trafficking

Mumbai, Oct 7 (UNI) The Mumbai Crime Branch has rescued a 16-year-old girl from an alleged prostitution racket after she was reportedly lured with an offer of domestic employment and later forced into prostitution. Two people have been arrested in connection with the case, police said.
The arrested accused have been identified as Saba Parveen Khan, 32, and Mohammed Yusuf Sheikh, 46.
According to the Crime Branch, the minor was initially taken to a room in a chawl after being promised domestic work. Police alleged that Khan was involved in bringing the girl into the racket through the employment offer, while Sheikh was operating the alleged prostitution racket from the room.
Investigators learnt that the girl had allegedly been taken to the chawl room on several occasions before she was subsequently abducted and forced into prostitution.
Police said that when the minor resisted, the accused allegedly threatened to defame her and cause harm to her mother.
After receiving information about the alleged racket, Crime Branch officials planned an operation using a decoy customer.
Police said an alleged transaction involving Rs 10,000 took place during the operation, following which Khan and Sheikh were arrested and the minor was rescued.
The girl underwent counselling after her rescue, during which another allegation of abuse emerged.
According to police, she told officials that she had also suffered physical abuse at home.
Officials noticed burn marks on her legs. The minor alleged that her mother had assaulted her and caused the burns while reprimanding her over her studies.
Police said the girl's parents are divorced and she had been living with her mother. Following her rescue, she was shifted to a shelter home with the assistance of an NGO for her safety and rehabilitation.
A case has been registered against the two arrested accused under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Immoral Traffic Prevention Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
The investigation is continuing to establish whether other people were involved in the alleged racket and to determine the full extent of the suspected trafficking network.
