Pune to host global dialogue on future of English language education

Pune, Oct 4 (UNI) The future of English language and literature education, amid the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI), the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, multilingual classrooms and changing teaching practices, will be discussed at a four-day international conference in Pune from October 7 to 10.
The 20th International and 56th Annual Conference of the English Language Teachers’ Association of India (ELTAI) will be held at MIT Art, Design and Technology (MIT-ADT) University at Loni-Kalbhor in Pune.
Around 1,000 English teachers and delegates from across India and more than 50 international scholars from Nepal, Bangladesh, Iraq, Uzbekistan, Malaysia and Thailand are expected to participate in the conference.
Maharashtra Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil, British Council Deputy Director Shannon West, Cambridge University South Asia Director T K Arunachalam, English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad, Vice-Chancellor Prof N Nagaraju, MIT-ADT University Executive President Prof Dr Mangesh Karad and Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Rajesh S. are scheduled to attend the inaugural session.
Union Minister of State for Cooperation and Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol is expected to attend the concluding ceremony. MIT-ADT University Provost Prof Dr Sayali Gankar said the rapid adoption of generative AI was transforming writing, translation, reading, assessment and teaching practices, while curriculum changes, multilingual classrooms and increased use of technology were creating new challenges for English educators. The conference will discuss ways of adapting English education to technological changes while retaining the importance of creativity, critical thinking and communication skills, she said.
University Registrar Dr Mahesh Chopade said the participation of scholars from different countries would provide a platform to discuss the relationship between educational policy and classroom practices.
Dr Atul Patil, Director, School of Holistic Development, and Dean, School of Humanities, said the rapid development of AI had raised questions about the future role of teachers and human capabilities in language education. The conference programme will include research presentations, workshops, seminars, panel discussions and expert sessions.
MIT-ADT University Pro-Chancellor and Executive President Prof Dr Mangesh Karad said the conference would provide an opportunity to examine new directions for humanities education amid rapid technological changes.
