Early morning fire near school in Diva leaves residents facing heavy losses as police investigate possible arson

Mumbai, Oct 13 (UNI) A major fire destroyed 23 vehicles parked along a roadside in the Sabegaon area of Diva in Thane district early on Tuesday, causing substantial financial losses to their owners. The damaged vehicles included 22 two-wheelers and an autorickshaw. Mumbra police have launched an investigation to determine whether the fire broke out accidentally or was deliberately started.
The incident occurred at around 2 am on the road opposite Adarsh Vidyalaya in Sabegaon, where local residents had parked their vehicles overnight. Several residential buildings in Diva lack adequate parking facilities, forcing residents to leave their two-wheelers and other vehicles along the roadsides. According to the available information, the parked vehicles suddenly caught fire, and the flames spread rapidly, engulfing one vehicle after another before residents could bring the situation under control.
On receiving information about the incident, personnel from Mumbra police station and the Thane Municipal Corporation's fire brigade rushed to the spot. Firefighters, assisted by local residents, made sustained efforts to extinguish the flames and prevent the fire from spreading further. The blaze was brought under control at approximately 3.16 am. However, by that time, all 23 vehicles had suffered extensive fire damage, leaving their owners facing considerable financial losses.
Among the damaged vehicles was an autorickshaw bearing registration number MH 04 KX 6216, whose owner's identity was not immediately available. The two-wheelers identified included a Hero motorcycle bearing registration number MH 08 AE 2150, owned by Ramesh Khochade, and a Hero Passion Pro bearing registration number MH 01 CY 7635, owned by Sameer Jadhav. A Honda SP 125 bearing registration number MH 04 MK 6406, belonging to Rakesh Tichkule, and a Honda Activa bearing registration number MH 01 EH 4289, owned by Sandeep Sharma, were also among the vehicles damaged in the fire.
Other affected vehicles included a Honda Shine bearing registration number MH 04 JE 9234, owned by Suyog Shirgaonkar, a Suzuki Avenis bearing registration number MH 04 MS 1135, belonging to Poonam Gupta, and a TVS Jupiter bearing registration number MH 08 BD 8447, owned by Balkrishna Kadam. A TVS Ntorq bearing registration number MH 06 CN 9689, owned by Keshav Shigwan, and a Bajaj Pulsar bearing registration number MH 04 LV 7809, belonging to Mahesh Pitale, were also destroyed.
The list of damaged vehicles further includes a Honda Shine 125 bearing registration number MH 03 FF 2947, owned by Vishant Sakpal, and another Honda Shine 125 bearing registration number MH 04 KK 6489, belonging to Satish Karkare. A Hero Splendor bearing registration number MH 04 LP 8492, owned by Vivek Chauhan, and a Suzuki Access bearing registration number MH 08 BH 8726, belonging to Shailesh Lodhat, were also affected. Another two-wheeler bearing registration number MH 45 R 7424, owned by Laxman Shinde, was among the vehicles damaged in the incident.
The registration numbers and ownership details of the remaining eight vehicles were not immediately available. Authorities have confirmed that a total of 23 vehicles were damaged in the blaze, although the exact financial loss suffered by individual owners has not yet been established.
Meanwhile, Mumbra police are examining the scene to determine the circumstances in which the fire started. Investigators are looking into whether the vehicles caught fire due to an accidental cause or whether someone intentionally set them ablaze. The precise cause remains unknown, and police have not reached a conclusion regarding the possibility of arson.
The incident has caused concern among residents of Sabegaon, particularly those who have no alternative but to park their vehicles along public roads because of inadequate parking arrangements in residential buildings.
The destruction of the vehicles has once again raised questions about vehicle safety and the risks associated with roadside parking in densely populated residential areas.
