FDA Crackdown Across Maha ;50 Tonnes Food Seized, 30 Licences Susspended

Mumbai, Sep 28 (UNI) The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has seized 50,601.78 kg, or 50.60 tonnes, of food stock valued at Rs 1.19 crore during a statewide crackdown conducted from September 23 to 27 ahead of the festive season.
According to a press note issued by FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, the seized stock included sweets, milk and milk products, edible oil, rice, dry fruits, namkeen, farsan, tea, spices, sauces, noodles, wafers and other food products.
The FDA has also suspended 30 food licences for violations of food safety and hygiene norms. Of these, 13 were in Mumbai, six in Konkan Division, eight in Pune Division and three in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Division.
In a parallel drive against banned products, the FDA inspected 26 establishments across Konkan, Pune, Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Nagpur divisions. Officials seized stock worth Rs 30.63 lakh, registered 22 FIRs and arrested 30 persons. Three establishments were sealed and three vehicles worth Rs 14.80 lakh seized.
In Mumbai, licences of 13 establishments were suspended with immediate effect under Section 32(3) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
At M/s Kyani & Co. in Kalbadevi, officials reportedly found cats, rat droppings, live flies and dead cockroaches in the preparation area. Blood was found collected in a refrigerator, while an open sewage manhole was present in the processing section and food was kept on the floor.
At M/s Colaba Sweet Mart in Colaba, officials reported finding live cockroaches on weighing scales, live lizards, flies and larvae in the preparation area. Mop buckets were also found near uncovered food.
Other establishments in Mumbai whose licences were suspended included Arun Vilas Farsan in Dharavi and Ruchi Veg Restaurant in Parel for alleged violations of Schedule 4 hygiene requirements.
The FDA also seized 7,340 kg of palmolein oil valued at Rs 11.81 lakh from M/s Shree Padmavati Enterprises in Jogeshwari West for alleged use of reused tins and violations of the Packaging Regulations, 2018.
In Konkan Division, 23,806.90 kg of stock valued at Rs 39.99 lakh was seized from establishments in Thane, Navi Mumbai, Raigad and Sindhudurg.
The seized items included 1,254 kg of Yellow Barik Shev and Chivda from Deepa Foods in Thane for alleged misbranding, 238.40 kg of mustard oil from Maxoil Enterprises in Wagle Estate, 3,789 kg of poppy seeds, flax seeds and cumin from Balshankar Purshottam at APMC Turbhe, and 13,437 kg of dry dates and walnuts from Happy Enterprise at APMC Vashi.
In Pune Division, 6,366.88 kg of stock valued at Rs 28.54 lakh was seized in Pune, Kolhapur and Solapur.
The FDA seized 385 kg of khoa from Ducks Foods Pvt Ltd in Pune, 50 kg of malai paneer from Godhade Dairy in Kolhapur over suspected use of industrial-grade acetic acid, and 558.4 kg of bhadang from Amba Bhadang in Kolhapur for alleged unauthorised use of the Vegan logo.
In Nagpur Division, stock valued at Rs 32.74 lakh was seized from establishments in Nagpur, Bhandara and Chandrapur. At Aamsar and Company in Nagpur, 1,997.6 kg of star anise valued at Rs 6.22 lakh was seized over alleged use of artificial colour.
In Jalgaon, the FDA seized 7,749.9 kg of stock valued at Rs 4.28 lakh, including 3,148 kg of tutti frutti from National Food Products in Raver and 3,492 kg of rice from Adwani Traders.
In Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Division, stock worth Rs 1.57 lakh was seized from establishments in Nanded, Hingoli and Jalna.
The FDA said samples of the seized products have been sent for laboratory analysis.
