Court issues warrant against Minister Nitesh Rane in defamation case filed by Sanjay Raut

Mumbai, Oct 31 (UNI) A Mazgaon court issued a warrant against senior BJP leader and Minister of Ports Development Nitesh Rane here on Saturday in connection with a case of criminal defamation filed by Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP and chief Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut.
Earlier, a warrant was issued at Minister Nitesh Rane’s residence address in Kankavli.
However, since that warrant could not be executed, sources said that a fresh warrant has been issued at Rane’s official residential address in Mumbai.
The case is related to a statement made at a press conference called by Nitesh Rane in May 2023 that Sanjay Raut would join the NCP soon.
Nitesh Rane had claimed at the press conference that meetings were held regarding Sanjay Raut’s entry to the NCP and that Raut was ready to join the party on the condition that the late Ajit Pawar gets expelled from the NCP.
This prompted both the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena and the NCP to reject Nitesh Rane’s claim about Sanjay Raut, after which Raut filed a case of criminal defamation against Nitesh Rane in 2023. He alleged that Rane referred to him as a “snake” who would abandon Uddhav Thackeray and join the NCP by June 10, 2023, which is the NCP’s 25th foundation day.
Rane was required to appear before the court to record his statement, but repeatedly failed to do so.
So far, two bailable warrants and one non-bailable warrant have been issued against Nitesh Rane, which were later cancelled by the Bombay High Court.
Due to Nitesh Rane’s repeated absence from the court hearing, the court had earlier issued a warrant at Rane’s Kankavli residential address.
After Sanjay Raut’s lawyers told the court that the Kankavli police had failed to execute the previous warrant even after three months, the court issued a fresh warrant at the address of Minister of Ports Development Nitesh Rane’s official residence in Mumbai.
