Nana Patekar’s funeral preparations underway at Nanachi Wadi in Pune, state honours announced

Pune, Oct 8 (UNI) Preparations for the funeral of veteran actor Nana Patekar are underway at his farmhouse in Donje village near Pune on Thursday, with the Maharashtra government announcing that his last rites would be performed with full state honours.
Nanachi Wadi is the famous 27-acre farmhouse of veteran Indian actor located in Donaje village near Khadakwasla and Sinhagad, on the outskirts of Pune.
Local residents of Donje village, in coordination with the Naam Foundation, are making arrangements at the site ahead of the funeral. A gathering of local residents, admirers and members of the film fraternity is expected at the venue as preparations continue.
Patekar’s mortal remains are expected to be brought to Pune later in the day and kept for public homage before the last rites.
Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar announced that the government has decided to accord Patekar a state funeral in recognition of his contribution to Marathi theatre as well as Marathi and Hindi cinema.
Patekar, 75, died in Goa early Thursday after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was found unconscious at his residence in Dona Paula and was taken to Manipal Hospital, where doctors attempted to revive him. He was declared dead at around 5.20 am.
Born Vishwanath Dinkarrao Patekar on January 1, 1951, in Murud, Maharashtra, Patekar began his acting career in Marathi theatre before making his film debut with Gaman in 1978. Over a career spanning nearly five decades, Patekar established himself as one of Indian cinema’s most versatile actors. He won three National Film Awards for his performances in Parinda, Krantiveer and Agni Sakshi. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2013 for his contribution to the arts.
His notable films included Prahaar: The Final Attack, Khamoshi: The Musical, Ab Tak Chhappan, Apaharan, Raajneeti and Welcome. His portrayal of gangster Uday Shetty in Welcome also showcased his comic timing.
In Marathi cinema, his performance as a retired theatre actor in Natsamrat (2016) was widely acclaimed. He also starred in Dr. Prakash Baba Amte – The Real Hero, for which he received the Filmfare Award for Best Actor (Marathi).
Patekar also worked as a director and writer. He directed and co-wrote Prahaar: The Final Attack, released in 1991, in which he also played the lead role.
He was also known for his social work and association with the Indian Army. Patekar co-founded the Naam Foundation, which has worked with farmers and communities affected by drought and economic hardship in Maharashtra.
His death has drawn tributes from across the film industry and beyond, with colleagues and admirers remembering his contribution to Indian cinema and theatre.UNI SP AAB
