Mahayuti govt using back-door ordinance to hand over Gokul to Amul, alleges Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat

Mumbai, Nov 5 (UNI) Senior Congress leader and former minister Balasaheb Thorat on Thursday launched a scathing attack on the Maharashtra government over the 'Gokul' Dairy crisis, alleging that the state's controversial ordinance is a ploy to demolish the state's cooperative sector and hand over the premier milk union to Gujarat's Amul brand.
Interacting with media persons here, Thorat slammed the Mahayuti government for bringing in an ordinance to appoint four government-nominated directors with voting rights, terming it an "unholy conspiracy" to grab power after losing the election.
"In a democracy and the cooperative sector, simple majority holds supreme. The entire nation remembers how Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government fell by just one vote in Parliament. Those who have won 13 seats out of 25 have the clear democratic right to elect the chairman," Thorat asserted.
Explaining the crux of the deadlock, Thorat pointed out that the election for the Gokul chairman requires a quorum of 14 members. "The 12 defeated members of the ruling alliance are intentionally staying absent to prevent the quorum from being met. Instead of amending the faulty quorum rule, the government has brought a new law to inject four nominated members with voting rights, pushing their tally to 16. This back-door entry by the BJP to capture power is completely unconstitutional," he said.
The Congress veteran warned Chief Minister Eknath Shinde not to become a party to "this sin," cautioning that the law will not stop at Gokul.
"This is not just about Gokul. Tomorrow, the same playbook will be used to swallow cooperative banks, sugar factories, and village credit societies wherever the BJP fails to win elections. Generations of farmers built Maharashtra’s robust cooperative ecosystem, and it is being systematically destroyed," Thorat warned.
Expressing grave concern over the future of the ₹4,000-crore milk union, Thorat directly linked the move to external corporate interests.
"Given how industries are being transferred across the country, we strongly suspect this entire exercise is designed to force Gokul into the hands of Gujarat's Amul. Leaders sitting in power in Maharashtra have become helpless against dictates from Delhi," he alleged.
Thorat's strong remarks add ammunition to the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) front, joining Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi in opposing the state's intervention ahead of the November 9 'Sangharsh Morcha' in Kolhapur and the High Court-directed chairman election on November 10.
