Maha: Anil Deshmukh questions Tatkare’s changing stand on NCP merger talks

Nagpur, Nov 6 (UNI) Senior Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) leader and former Maharashtra Home Minister, Anil Deshmukh, today questioned the change in stand of NCP leader Sunil Tatkare over the proposed merger of the two factions of the party, asking who had pressured him earlier to deny that such discussions were taking place.
Deshmukh said several meetings had been held during the lifetime of late Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar to explore the possibility of bringing the two NCP factions together.
He revealed that an important meeting was held at the residence of senior NCP leader Jayant Patil, where discussions took place regarding the organisational structure of the proposed united party, including who would assume the state president's post and other key responsibilities.
Another meeting was subsequently held in Baramati in the presence of Ajit Pawar and other senior leaders from both factions, he said.
Deshmukh pointed out that despite these discussions, Tatkare had then maintained that no talks on the merger had taken place.
He questioned the reason behind Tatkare's present change of position and sought clarification about whether any pressure had been exerted on him at that time.
Deshmukh clarified that no discussions on the merger were currently underway and ruled out the possibility of the two NCP factions coming together.
However, he said the doors of his party were open to leaders from the Ajit Pawar-led faction who wished to join the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP).
He asserted that his party would continue to maintain its independent identity and welcomed those willing to join its ranks.
