Maha: MNS chief blasts govt over Pune bridge collapse, calls for accountability

Mumbai, June 16 (UNI) Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president, Raj Thackeray, on Monday sharply criticised the BJP alliance government over its negligence following tragic collapse of the Kanthmala bridge over the Indrayani River in Pune district, which resulted in four deaths and 51 injuries.
Expressing condolences on behalf of himself and the MNS, Thackeray extended sympathies to the families of the victims of the Sunday afternoon disaster.
He questioned the government’s failure to prevent the tragedy, asking why the bridge, known to be in a dangerous condition, was not completely closed or replaced.
“If the bridge was hazardous, why wasn’t it demolished and rebuilt? Why was it still accessible to the public?” he demanded.
Raj Thackeray dismissed the government’s routine statement that “rescue operations are underway and the government stands firmly with the affected,” calling it a mere platitude and demanding answers on the root causes of such recurring infrastructure failures.
He further questioned the effectiveness of government departments responsible for infrastructure safety. “Why aren’t vulnerable bridges inspected regularly, especially before the monsoon? If repairs cannot be made, why not shut them down? If those in power cannot ensure these basic safeguards, what purpose does their governance serve?” he asked pointedly.
While holding the government accountable, the MNS chief also urged the public to exercise caution when visiting such sites, particularly with family members, acknowledging that vigilance is necessary amid ongoing administrative lapses.
Highlighting the early onset of the monsoon, he warned of increasing risks such as waterlogging, potholes, and bridge collapses, urging the government to act swiftly and decisively to reduce public distress.
This tragic incident has once again spotlighted concerns over the state’s aging infrastructure and the urgent need for proactive maintenance and safety measures to prevent such disasters in the future.
