BJP Challenges Congress Over Voter List Revision Cites Electoral Roll Data To Defend Election Commission

Mumbai, Oct 10 (UNI) Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Navnath Ban on Saturday accused the Congress of adopting inconsistent positions on the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in different states.
He questioned the party's objections to the exercise in Maharashtra and urged its leadership to reconsider its earlier stand on the Election Commission's voter list revision process.
Addressing journalists at the BJP state office in Mumbai, Ban alleged that the Congress had supported the SIR exercise in some states while opposing the same process elsewhere. Referring to Kerala, he said Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala had appreciated the revision exercise when it was conducted in that state. Ban questioned how the process could be considered acceptable in Kerala but objectionable in Maharashtra.
The BJP spokesperson also cited Tamil Nadu and West Bengal while questioning the Congress position on electoral roll revision. He asked why the Election Commission's procedures were being challenged if an Opposition party had secured victory in Tamil Nadu following the SIR exercise and the Congress had achieved electoral success in Kerala.
According to Ban, the Congress should explain the differences in its approach towards the same electoral process across states.
Presenting figures that he attributed to the Election Commission, Ban said the revision process had been completed for approximately 82 crore voters out of the country's total electorate of 95 crore, representing around 88 per cent. He stated that the remaining 13 crore entries included migrant voters, duplicate registrations and the names of deceased persons.
Ban further claimed that approximately 2.89 crore registered voters had died, while nearly 1.1 crore names appeared at two different locations in the electoral rolls. He cited these figures to support his argument that the revision exercise was intended to identify discrepancies and update voter records.
Defending the Election Commission, Ban maintained that no eligible voter's name had been deliberately removed from the electoral rolls. He said individuals whose names were missing could submit Form 6 to seek registration again and have their names included in the voter list.
The BJP spokesperson reiterated that the Congress should review its position on the Special Intensive Revision and explain why it was questioning a process that, according to him, it had previously supported in other states.
