According to local beliefs, Ashwatthama, a character from the Mahabharata, performed penance at this hilltop.
Devotees trek to the temple situated at an altitude of approximately 4,000 feet above sea level, carrying flags and ceremonial kalash (sacred pots) on their heads. The much-awaited Astamba Rishi Yatra has commenced at the highest peak of the Satpura range, attracting thousands of tribal devotees from Maharashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.
One of the unique traditions associated with this pilgrimage is the offering of newly harvested food grains to Astamba Rishi. Tribal communities first offer the newly grown grains as Naivedya to the deity and only then begin harvesting crops from their fields.
Thousands of devotees undertake the challenging trek to the shrine, located nearly 4,000 feet above sea level. Carrying flags and chanting slogans in praise of Astamba Rishi, devotees climb the mountain on foot with immense faith and devotion.
The scenic surroundings and religious significance of the pilgrimage make it a major attraction every year, with the number of devotees increasing annually.
Meanwhile, the Dhadgaon Police have made special security arrangements for this year's festival. The entire Astamba mountain region will be monitored with the help of drones to ensure the safety of pilgrims.
