Congress alleges irregularities in SIR, seeks publication of voter data

Mumbai, Sep 22 ( UNI) Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal on Tuesday alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state and demanded that the Election Commission publish details of voters identified for deletion constituency-wise and booth-wise.
Sapkal led a Congress delegation that met Maharashtra Chief Electoral Officer S. Chockalingam in Mumbai to raise concerns over the ongoing electoral roll revision.
The delegation included Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Vijay Wadettiwar, Congress Working Committee member and former minister Naseem Khan, deputy leader of the Congress Legislature Party Amin Patel, MLA Bhai Jagtap and other party leaders.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Sapkal claimed that the electoral roll in Maharashtra had earlier contained around 9.78 crore voters and alleged that 3.28 crore names had been excluded during the SIR process. He questioned the methodology and figures being used by the Election Commission and sought greater transparency in the revision exercise.
Sapkal also demanded that details of all voters classified as doubtful or requiring verification be made publicly available on the Election Commission's website, with constituency-wise and booth-wise information. He claimed that around 1.22 crore voters categorised as "anomalous" had not received notices and questioned why the data was not being disclosed.
The Congress leader further demanded that the period for filing claims and objections, currently scheduled from August 31 to September 30, be extended by three months. He said the ongoing festive season made it difficult for citizens to participate fully in the process.
Sapkal also reiterated Congress' allegations regarding discrepancies in voter numbers in Maharashtra and referred to the party's earlier claims concerning alleged "vote theft". He alleged that questions remained unanswered regarding around 75 lakh voters and demanded clarification from the Election Commission.
On the drought situation, Sapkal criticised the state government for planning surveys before taking a decision on declaring drought. He demanded that drought be declared across affected areas immediately and sought financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh per hectare for farmers. He also suggested that funds allocated for the proposed Shaktipeeth Expressway be utilised for drought relief.
Responding to questions about former MLA Rahul Bondre, Sapkal alleged that the BJP was using pressure tactics to induce leaders from opposition parties to join it. He said political differences should be addressed democratically and alleged that cases were being used to put pressure on opposition leaders. UNI SP AAB

Protesters detained outside IIT Bombay over student suicide

Mumbai, Sept 22 (UNI) Police on Tuesday detained dozens of activists belonging to the RPI A and Bharat Mukti Morcha after they staged a protest outside the main gate of IIT Bombay over the alleged death by suicide of 22-year-old student Sahil Wakode, an official said. This was the second day of protests with Youth Congress activists staging a demonstration near the campus gate on Monday.
