Mumbai sizzles in October heat as air quality worsens

Mumbai, Oct 13 (UNI) Mumbai continued to experience intense heat and humidity on Tuesday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting a maximum temperature of around 37 degrees Celsius and generally clear skies throughout the day.
The city recorded a minimum temperature of 31 degrees Celsius in the morning, while calm winds and persistent humidity added to the discomfort. The heatwave-like conditions followed a sharp rise in temperatures on Monday, when the Santacruz observatory recorded 38.2 degrees Celsius, making it the second-highest October maximum temperature in Mumbai since 2015.
According to the IMD, the city's maximum temperature increased by approximately two degrees Celsius between Sunday and Monday. The Santacruz reading of 38.2 degrees Celsius on Monday was 5.1 notches above normal, reflecting the intensity of the prevailing October heat. The weather department initially issued a yellow alert for hot and humid conditions on Monday but upgraded it to a heatwave warning around noon as temperatures continued to rise.
IMD Mumbai Director Bikram Singh said heatwave-like conditions were expected to continue on Tuesday, followed by a period of hot and humid weather. He indicated that some relief could be expected after a couple of days, although maximum temperatures were likely to remain above 35 degrees Celsius throughout the week. Singh explained that the extent of the temperature fluctuations would depend on prevailing wind flow patterns, which would influence how quickly the city experienced any reduction in heat.
Mumbai was also among the hottest locations in Maharashtra on Monday, recording the state's third-highest maximum temperature. Ratnagiri registered the highest temperature at 39.2 degrees Celsius, which was 7.6 degrees above normal, while Malegaon recorded 38.4 degrees Celsius, exceeding its normal temperature by 5.6 degrees. Mumbai's Santacruz observatory recorded 38.2 degrees Celsius, highlighting the widespread above-normal temperatures affecting parts of the state.
Alongside the persistent heat, Mumbai's air quality deteriorated on Tuesday morning, with the city's overall Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 139, placing it in the Poor category under the classification cited in the report. The reading indicated a decline from the Good air quality levels generally recorded across Mumbai during recent months.
Under the stated AQI classification, readings between 0 and 50 are considered Good, while values from 51 to 100 fall under the Moderate category. AQI readings between 101 and 200 are classified as Poor, levels between 201 and 300 as Unhealthy, and readings above 300 as Severe. The AQI of 139 therefore placed Mumbai within the Poor category on Tuesday morning.
The combination of above-normal temperatures, high humidity, and deteriorating air quality is expected to prolong uncomfortable weather conditions for residents. Although the IMD has indicated that temperatures may ease slightly after a couple of days, the maximum is forecast to remain above 35 degrees Celsius for much of the week, with wind patterns playing an important role in determining the extent of the relief.
