Nearly 8,000 children killed in road accidents in Bangladesh since 2020: Report

Dhaka, Oct 25 (UNI) At least 7,963 children were killed in road accidents in Bangladesh between 2020 and September 2026, including 2,513 who died while travelling to or from educational institutions, according to a report by the Road Safety Foundation (RSF), local media reported.
The findings, published by Bangladeshi daily The Daily Star, are based on reports in nine national newspapers, 17 national and regional online news portals, electronic media coverage and the organisation's own sources.
Of the children killed, 2,958 were riding or travelling as passengers on motorcycles, while 2,812 were pedestrians and 2,913 were passengers in other vehicles, the report said. Another 962 children were killed while playing on roads near their homes.
Rural roads recorded the highest number of child fatalities, at 2,713, followed by regional roads with 2,082 deaths, highways with 1,974 and urban roads with 1,194.
Children aged 13 to 17 accounted for the largest share of fatalities, with 3,547 deaths. Another 2,884 victims were aged between six and 12, while 1,532 were five years old or younger.
The report found that 2,634 children died in accidents during the afternoon, the highest number for any period of the day. A further 2,168 deaths occurred in the morning and 1,813 around midday.
The RSF attributed child fatalities to inadequate awareness of traffic rules, reckless driving, unsafe roads and transport systems, and insufficient medical facilities for crash victims, The Daily Star reported.
It called for safer road infrastructure, road safety education at schools and homes, action against unskilled and underage drivers, and improved treatment facilities in hospitals.
Separately, the Passenger Welfare Association of Bangladesh said at least 1,25,405 people were killed and 1,76,249 injured in 72,736 road accidents between 2014 and June 2026, according to Bangladeshi newspaper New Age.UNI XC AAB
