At least 46 killed in high-speed train collision in Spain

Madrid, Oct 28 (UNI) At least 46 people were killed when two high-speed trains collided in Spain's Toledo province on Wednesday, on a line connecting Madrid with the southern Andalusia region, according to a regional government spokesperson, rail infrastructure manager Adif and regional civil protection sources.
The collision occurred at 8:54 am (0754 GMT), involving a Renfe train and an Iryo train, a spokesperson for the Castilla-La Mancha regional government said. Two Iryo carriages derailed in the incident.
The collision involved a train operated by state-owned Renfe and another run by private operator Iryo between the towns of Mora, Orgaz and Urda, railway infrastructure manager ADIF said.
Both trains were travelling on the route connecting Madrid with Seville in the southern Andalusia region.
The cause of the collision is yet to be determined and the number of injured people are still to be confirmed, the spokesperson added.
Adif said rail traffic on the Madrid-Andalusia high-speed line has been suspended following a rear-end collision between the two trains.
Esther Padilla, spokesperson for the regional government of Castilla-La Mancha, said one of the trains was carrying 146 passengers and a baby, while the other had 397 passengers on board.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said he was shocked by the "serious train incident" and said emergency services were working at the scene to assist those affected.
"My affection, solidarity, and support to all the victims and their families," Sanchez said in a post on X.
Authorities were preparing a facility to receive injured passengers following a request from the Civil Protection agency, Urda Mayor Manuel Galan told radio station Cadena Ser.
Football clubs, including Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, also expressed condolences to the victims and their families.
The crash comes nine months after another collision involving high-speed trains operated by the same companies on the same line killed 46 people.
That accident occurred in January near Adamuz, in Cordoba province, when a derailed train struck an oncoming train. It prompted renewed debate over investment in railway maintenance in recent years.
