Vance sent letter to Iran’s national security chief Mohsen Rezaei stressing negotiations on Iranian nuclear programme

Washington/Tehran, Oct 29 (UNI) US Vice President JD Vance sent a letter to Iran’s national security chief, Mohsen Rezaei, stressing that any negotiations to avert US military strikes must include discussions on Tehran’s nuclear programme, a US official said.
The letter, which explored the possibility of restarting talks between Washington and Tehran, marks the highest-level US outreach to Iran in several months.
It comes as President Donald Trump is considering resuming major combat operations in Iran after the US midterm elections.
Vance suggested sending the letter to Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, who has direct access to Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.
“The President was enthusiastic about the letter,” the US official said, declining to specify when it was sent. The Wall Street Journal first reported the correspondence.
Trump told reporters on Wednesday that the letter was intended to help Iran obtain medical supplies. “Basically, it’s getting supplies in to help people that are not well,” he said.
A major obstacle to renewed negotiations remains Iran’s demand that Washington lift its naval blockade, release frozen funds and allow Iranian oil sales before talks resume.
The US, by contrast, wants Tehran to restart nuclear negotiations before offering sanctions relief.
Rezaei, a former commander in the IRGC, has emerged as an influential hardliner.
The Wall Street Journal reported that he had advocated military operations against the UAE, as well as attacks on data centres and other critical infrastructure across the region.
Rezaei has said Iran would not negotiate with the US unless its demands were met.
A spokesman for the vice president’s office declined to comment to the Wall Street Journal after the White House referred the newspaper’s request to Vance’s team.
Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman said he had not been informed of the letter, while Rezaei could not be reached for comment, the newspaper reported.
