Iran denies UK allegations over RAF Fairford incident, demands evidence

London, Oct 13 (UNI) Iran on Tuesday denied British allegations that it was behind a security incident at RAF Fairford, a UK airbase used by the US military, after Prime Minister Andy Burnham said it was “highly likely” the incident had been coordinated in Iran and “almost certainly” directed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned what it described as “unfounded accusations” by Britain, arguing that the use of phrases such as “highly likely” and “almost certainly” amounted to vague language unsupported by concrete evidence.
Tehran called on the British government to substantiate its allegations, according to Iranian state media.
Burnham told the House of Commons on Monday that Britain had “strong indications” of Iranian involvement in the September 27 incident, which triggered a major security alert at the base in southwest England and led to the withdrawal of US B-1 bombers.
“I can confirm our assessment that it is highly likely to have been coordinated in Iran, almost certainly directed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard,” Burnham said. “We will not tolerate these threats on our soil.”
The British government summoned Iran’s ambassador, Ali Moussavi, over the incident, while Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband announced sanctions against two Iranian nationals accused of facilitating hostile activities on behalf of Tehran.
The measures include an asset freeze, travel ban and disqualification from serving as a company director, Miliband said.
The two individuals named were Ruhollah Bazghandi, identified by Britain as the head of counterespionage operations in the IRGC, and Shahram Ali Reza Tamarzadeh Jakki, an alleged facilitator for the Zindashti criminal network.
Burnham said Britain could impose further sanctions on Iran, adding that the government would use its powers to target criminal networks and their funding streams.
Five British nationals were arrested near RAF Fairford on September 27 on suspicion of terrorism and explosives-related offences. They were later released on bail under strict conditions, and another arrest followed days later.
Police had said they were examining the possibility of involvement by a foreign state actor after a local farmer reported suspicious activity involving a group of men and several white vans near the base.
Preliminary reports indicated that investigators found accelerants, including petroleum, in the vehicles, although the viability of any alleged explosives-related plot remained unclear.
The incident prompted the withdrawal of US B-1 bombers from RAF Fairford, while B-52 bombers remained at the base.
Separately, 29 countries issued a joint statement condemning Iran’s use of violent attacks, including alleged lethal plots, arson, sabotage, cyberattacks and other hostile activities against them and their partners. The signatories included the United States, Britain, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Spain and Ireland.
