Trump says large-scale oil, gas, mineral exploration of Greenland set to begin

Washington, Oct 14 (UNI) US President Donald Trump has said large-scale oil, gas and mineral exploration is preparing to begin in Greenland, reports CBS News.
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday, Trump wrote: "Massive Oil, Gas, and Mineral Exploration is getting ready to begin in our new and beautiful Greenland!" He did not provide details about the projects, companies involved or when exploration would start.
Trump claimed that Greenland could hold vast quantities of accessible oil, saying experts believed its reserves were greater than those of almost any other territory in the world.
He also emphasised the island's importance to US defence, arguing that any future attack on the United States would have to pass across Greenland, where American forces could intercept incoming drones, missiles and other weapons.
"It gives us time, location, and sightline, like nowhere else in the World!" he wrote.
The announcement came three weeks after the US, Denmark and Greenland signed a new security agreement aimed at strengthening American military and security operations in the Arctic and North Atlantic.
The agreement gives Washington expanded military access to Greenland's territory and airspace, while allowing it to modernise and expand the existing Pituffik Space Base, which provides early warning of incoming missiles. It also provides for the establishment of two additional defence areas at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig.
The pact includes provisions for cooperation on minerals and resource-related activities, but does not itself grant oil, gas or mineral exploration rights. It also restricts non-NATO countries from establishing military installations on the island without the parties' agreement.
It remains unclear which projects Trump was referring to. Greenland has banned new oil exploration licences since 2021, and its government has not confirmed plans for imminent large-scale oil and gas development.
Industry experts have long noted that, despite the island's substantial mineral potential, harsh Arctic conditions, limited infrastructure and high extraction costs have made many projects commercially challenging.
Trump has sought greater US control over Greenland since his first presidential term, citing its strategic location and natural resources. He has previously suggested purchasing the semi-autonomous Danish territory and has not ruled out using military force to secure it.
