North Korea fires suspected ballistic missile into East Sea

Seoul, Sep 20 (UNI ) North Korea fired a suspected ballistic missile towards the East Sea on Sunday, South Korea’s military and Japan’s Defense Ministry said.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said it detected the launch from North Korea’s eastern coast, but did not immediately provide details on the type of missile or its flight path.
Japan’s Defense Ministry said the projectile had fallen into the sea shortly after the launch and is believed to have landed outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.
The launch came eight days after North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles from the Wonsan area towards the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan. Pyongyang later described that launch as part of a joint firepower drill.
North Korea has carried out missiles launches on 13 occasions this year, excluding Sunday’s launch, according to South Korean authorities. The Sept. 12 launch involved multiple short-range ballistic missiles that flew about 250 kilometres, according to officials.
Sunday’s launch come shortly after North Korea reaffirmed its status as a nuclear-armed state and rejected a resolution adopted by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) calling for an end to its nuclear activities.
A North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesperson said the IAEA resolution had no effect on the country’s status as a nuclear weapons state, referring to North Korea by its official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).
North Korea has legally enshrined its status as a nuclear-armed state, with its leadership declaring its nuclear arsenal permanent and irreversible.
The latest missile launch also comes amid uncertainty over prospects for renewed dialogue between Pyongyang and Washington. US President Donald Trump has expressed interest in meeting North Korean leader Kim Jong Un again after holding three meetings with him during his first term.
North Korea, however, has rejected the talks, saying the US administration has maintained a hostile policy towards Pyongyang.UNI AAB
