US warns allies of five-year delay in key weapon systems due to stockpile depletions amid Iran war

Washington, Sep 19 (UNI) The US has warned allies that deliveries of key missile systems could be delayed by several years as depleted weapons stocks and production bottlenecks caused by the Iran war put pressure on American supplies, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
The shortages have also hit European efforts to provide Ukraine with urgently needed air-defence ammunition, according to the report.
Germany has asked Washington to accelerate deliveries of Tomahawk cruise missiles and ground-based Typhon launchers, but Raytheon is unlikely to fulfil the order within five years because of depleted stocks, Bloomberg reported.
Some Eastern European countries have also faced delivery delays since shortly after the US-Israeli war with Iran began, according to the outlet’s sources.
US President Donald Trump has rejected claims that the Iran war has left the US short of ammunition, but the Pentagon has acknowledged growing pressure on its stockpiles.
Earlier this week, the Defense Department’s inspector general said heavy weapons use during the Iran campaign had “resulted in strategic inventory shortfalls and revealed industrial base bottlenecks for munitions resupply”.
A separate Congressional Budget Office assessment found that the US had used between half and two-thirds of its stocks of certain missile-defence interceptors since June 2025. Rebuilding those inventories could take at least five years, even with increased production.
The shortages are particularly significant for Ukraine, which relies on sophisticated Western interceptors to defend against Russian missile strikes, including attacks on defence-related facilities.
The Washington Post reported in May that Kyiv was “almost completely out” of PAC-3 interceptors used by Patriot air-defence systems. European allies have also become increasingly concerned that depleted US stocks could disrupt the PURL programme, under which they finance the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said last month that Kyiv’s partners had supplied only about one-third as many air-defence missiles during 2026 as in the same period of 2025. Ukrainian forces have also acknowledged on several occasions that they failed to intercept any Russian missiles during some overnight attacks.
European leaders are expected to raise the issue with Trump at meetings surrounding the UN General Assembly next week, including calls for additional Patriot systems for Ukraine, Bloomberg reported.
EU officials are also reportedly seeking US licences that would allow European countries to manufacture Patriot missiles themselves, potentially reducing their dependence on American supplies.
Moscow has repeatedly argued that Western military assistance is prolonging the conflict without changing its outcome. Earlier this month, Kremlin foreign policy aide Yury Ushakov said the US could help bring the war to an end sooner by “first and foremost stopping any assistance to Kiev”.
