Afghan forces dismantle eight heroin laboratories, arrest 17 suspects in Ghor

Kabul, Nov 1 (UNI) Afghan security forces have dismantled eight clandestine heroin processing laboratories and arrested 17 suspected drug traffickers in western Ghor province, a provincial police official said on Sunday.
Counter-narcotics units carried out a targeted operation on the outskirts of Chaharsada district following intelligence inputs and a tip-off, destroying the laboratories and seizing large quantities of precursor chemicals and narcotics used in heroin production, provincial police spokesman Mawlawi Abdul Rahman Badri said.
The suspects have been taken into custody and handed over to judicial authorities, with case files submitted for further legal proceedings, Badri said, Xinhua News Agency reported.
The operation is part of an intensified nationwide campaign by Afghan authorities to combat drug trafficking and dismantle illicit production and distribution networks.
In a separate operation, police in western Farah province publicly burned nearly one tonne of seized narcotics on October 18, provincial police spokesman Kalimullah Nangyal said.
The drugs, including 955 kg of opium-type substances, hashish and 36 kg of methamphetamine, had been seized during a series of recent operations, he said.
Police also arrested a suspected drug smuggler, who was to be handed over to judicial authorities after the completion of a preliminary investigation, Nangyal added.
Earlier, on October 16, counter-narcotics police seized 136 kg of opium-type drugs and arrested three suspected smugglers in southern Helmand province, according to the provincial Directorate of Information and Culture.
The contraband was recovered from two vehicles in Sangin district on October 15. The three suspects were detained for investigation and were to be referred to the judiciary after preliminary inquiries, the statement said.
In another major operation, Afghan police destroyed 161 tonnes of assorted illicit narcotics in western Herat province on October 13 following a year-long counter-narcotics campaign.
