Michigan Senate Race: Abdul El-Sayed and Mike Rogers battle for control of US Senate

Washington, Nov 2 (UNI) Control of the US Senate after Tuesday’s midterm elections could hinge on Michigan, where a fiercely contested and closely watched race is unfolding between Democrat Abdul El-Sayed and Republican Mike Rogers.
For Rogers, 63, the challenge is formidable: Can a Republican candidate overcome voter frustration over inflation, international conflicts and President Donald Trump’s declining approval ratings?
For El-Sayed, 42, the question is equally significant: Will his bold progressive agenda resonate with ordinary Americans, or will his ambitious vision prove too far to the left for Middle America?
Abdul El-Sayed, son of Egyptian immigrants, has built an unconventional path from academic excellence to public health leadership and politics.
A Rhodes Scholar and Columbia University medical graduate, El-Sayed moved into public health administration before entering electoral politics.
His political rise gained momentum after he narrowly defeated a more centrist opponent in Michigan’s Democratic primary, winning by less than one percentage point.
Now, he is aiming for a much bigger victory: defeating Republican Mike Rogers while pushing the Democratic Party towards a more progressive political direction.
At the heart of El-Sayed’s campaign is a promise of sweeping transformation. His agenda includes breaking up corporate monopolies, introducing a Medicare for All healthcare system and imposing an arms embargo on Israel.
His message is clear: incremental change is not enough. He wants a fundamental reshaping of America's economic, healthcare and foreign policies.El-Sayed is often associated with the Democratic Socialists of America, but he isn't a member, and he keeps his distance from the label.
"I'm a capitalist who understands the idea that you should have guaranteed healthcare in the country, anybody who tells you that's anti-capitalist is not really understanding how capitalism works," El-Sayed said.
But whether voters are ready to embrace that vision could determine not only his political future, but also the balance of power in the US Senate.
Mike Rogers is a Republican politician from Michigan, USA, who is campaigning for a seat in the US Senate. He is running against Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed in a closely watched Michigan Senate race.
He is a former US Army officer, FBI agent and Congressman who represented Michigan in the House of Representatives for 14 years (2001–2015).His central campaign message is: Michigan first, Washington politics second.
His campaign focuses on six main issues: Education and literacy: Rogers wants to improve children's reading skills, arguing that poor literacy is affecting young people's ability to qualify for military service and succeed in life; he promises to prioritise Michigan's workers, families and businesses, particularly communities such as Flint.
Here is a catch: although he is a Republican, Rogers disagrees with Trump's tariffs on Canada and argue that they are hurting Michigan's economy. He says he would support efforts to override the president on tariffs if necessary.
He strongly supports Israel's right to exist and defend itself as a Jewish state. He opposes El-Sayed's description of Israel's actions in Gaza as genocide.
Drawing on his experience as an FBI agent, Rogers presents himself as someone with experience tackling organised crime and public corruption.
He is campaigning in predominantly African American neighbourhoods, trying to convince voters that Democrats have taken their support for granted.
His relationship with Donald Trump is one of the most politically interesting aspects of Rogers's campaign. Trump has endorsed Rogers. However, Rogers has publicly disagreed with Trump over tariffs, particularly those affecting trade with Canada. He has also suggested he would be willing to challenge the president on tariff policy.
On Trump's alleged corruption issues, Rogers has avoided directly criticising the administration, saying he will judge matters on the facts.
Israel-Palestine issue holds significance in Michigan as it has a substantial Arab American population and a significant Jewish electorate. Both groups could influence the result. Rogers has accused El-Sayed of creating an atmosphere that fuels antisemitism.
The election is scheduled for November 3, 2026. Rogers is trying to flip a Democratic-held Senate seat, currently held by retiring Senator Gary Peters. The result could influence which party controls the US Senate.
There has also been a major last-minute development: Democratic Congresswoman Haley Stevens, whom El-Sayed defeated in the primary, endorsed Rogers on November 1, citing disagreements with El-Sayed.
