Thousands of students take to the streets across France to protest lack of resources in education system

Paris, Oct 6 (UNI) France saw a third day of protests by secondary school pupils and university students as thousands took to the streets in cities across the country as protesters blockaded hundreds of high schools in a day of action against long hours, missing teachers and crumbling classrooms.
The protesters, joined by parents and trade unions, are condemning the lack of resources in the national education system.
The French interior ministry said 86,000 people took part in marches in cities including Marseille, Nantes and Lyon on Tuesday morning, with up to 40,000 more expected to join the largest demonstration, in Paris.
Around 30 demonstrations by secondary school, university students, parents, teachers and trade unionists were planned for Tuesday afternoon in France.
This new day of protests was described by the union syndicale lycéenne as ‘Act III’ of the campaign.
The protesters are calling for more staff and funding for the national education system, and are criticising overcrowded classrooms, the failure to replace teachers, overloaded timetables, the poor state of school buildings and classrooms, and inequalities linked to the Parcoursup university admissions system.
The demonstrations come after a fortnight of protests that began in the capital’s northern suburbs before snowballing across the country. They have been marred by frequent and often violent clashes with riot police that have left hundreds injured, some severely.
While many protests have been peaceful, some demonstrators have set dustbins on fire, destroyed bus shelters and thrown projectiles at police, who have responded with batons, teargas and riot-control rounds.
Twenty-four schools have been burned or ransacked since the start of the protests, according to the education ministry.
The Minister for Education, Édouard Geffray, has stated that since the start of the protests, 85 members of teaching staff have been injured, as have 215 pupils and 715 members of the police force.
Lessons were suspended “either completely or partially” in 891 schools out of the 3,700 across the country.
