Trump revives ‘shithouse countries’ remark, attacks Democrat over Haiti Immigration Bill

Washington, Oct 25 (UNI) US President Donald Trump has revived his controversial “shithouse countries” remark while attacking Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff over his support for legislation seeking temporary protected status for Haitian immigrants.
Addressing a campaign rally in Perry, Georgia, Trump accused Ossoff of backing a bill that would allow migrants from countries he described as being affected by terrorism to remain in the United States.
“And John Ossoff personally sponsored a bill to bring armies of migrants from terror-infested countries like Libya, Yemen, Haiti, Somalia. Remember? Remember what I called them? Shithouse countries,” Trump said.
“Remember the heat I took? Remember the heat I took from the Democrats?” he added, recalling the controversy over his remarks during an immigration policy meeting with senators in 2018.
Trump also made unsubstantiated claims about Somalis living in the United States, alleging that 98 per cent did not work and benefited from theft.
“You know, 98 per cent of the people that we have here now in Somalia don't work, and they don't even have to work because they steal so much, they all have a Mercedes-Benz,” he said.
“Low IQ, and they live better than you do,” Trump added.
Recalling the 2018 meeting, Trump said he had questioned why the United States accepted immigrants from countries he considered undesirable rather than from European nations.
“And I said, ‘Why do we always have to take people from shithouse countries? Why can't we take people from, like, well, Norway? Yeah. Sweden? Why not Denmark?’” he said.
The legislation at the centre of Trump's criticism, Senate Bill 4814, was introduced on June 17 by Democratic Senator Ed Markey and other lawmakers. It sought to require the Secretary of Homeland Security to designate Haiti for temporary protected status until three months after January 20, 2029. Ossoff supported the measure as a co-sponsor.
Temporary protected status allows eligible nationals of designated countries to remain and work in the United States when conditions at home make their return unsafe.
Trump's remarks revive a controversy dating to January 2018, when he was reported to have used the same phrase while discussing immigration with Senators at the White House. The reported comments referred to Haiti and African countries, with Trump allegedly questioning why the United States was accepting immigrants from those places rather than from countries such as Norway.
Trump initially denied using the phrase, while Democratic Senator Dick Durbin, who attended the meeting, publicly confirmed the account.
According to a CNN report published in December 2025, Trump later acknowledged using the expression during a speech in Pennsylvania, recounting his preference for immigrants from Norway, Sweden and Denmark.
Durbin subsequently said Trump's acknowledgement vindicated his account of the 2018 meeting, telling the Senate that he had spent years facing accusations of misleading the public about the president's remarks.
Trump's latest comments come as he campaigns for Republican candidates ahead of the US midterm elections in November, placing immigration and the treatment of migrants from developing countries back in the political spotlight.UNI AAB
