Iranian parliamentary committee advances bill to formalise control over Strait of Hormuz by charging tolls on ships

Tehran, Oct 2 (UNI) An Iranian parliamentary committee has completed its review of a proposed bill that would formalise Tehran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz and allow it to charge commercial vessels for using the vital waterway.
Hassan Ghashghavi, spokesman for parliament’s National Security Commission, told the semi-official Tasnim news agency that the proposed “Strategic Action Plan for Ensuring Security and Sustainable Development of the Strait of Hormuz” would preserve Iranian control over maritime traffic in line with the country’s national interests and security.
Under the bill, Iran would charge vessels for services including navigation, environmental protection, bunkering and fuel. Ships linked to Israel, countries deemed hostile by Tehran, countries that have carried out military action against Iran, and vessels carrying military cargo would be barred from transiting the strait, Ghashghavi said.
Vessels from countries not considered hostile would need authorisation from Iran’s General Staff of the Armed Forces before passing through the waterway.
The bill will now go before the full parliament for debate and a vote. If approved, it would still require review by the Guardian Council and other authorities before becoming law.
The Trump administration has rejected Tehran’s claims that it will control the strait in future, as well as its current demands that commercial vessels obtain permission to transit.
Iran has repeatedly targeted tankers and other ships it accuses of passing through the strait without permission, severely disrupting oil and gas shipments from the Persian Gulf since the war began.
