Netanyahu warns Hamas may attempt a second terror attack ahead of Knesset elections

Jerusalem, Oct 6 (UNI) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned that Hamas may attempt to carry out an attack ahead of Israel's October 27 election, saying the country is prepared to respond.
"Because Hamas is so weak, it will try to challenge us with the remnants of its forces ahead of the election in an attempt to influence it," Netanyahu said during a cabinet meeting on Tuesday. "We are prepared for this. First and foremost, we will thwart such attempts, and in any event, we will respond with overwhelming force if they make that mistake."
Netanyahu said Israel had "turned the tables" since Hamas's October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel, which triggered the war in Gaza and what he has described as a "seven-front war".
"Israel is the strongest country in the Middle East, and our enemies are weaker than ever," he said. "I say to all our enemies: Look at what we have done to you on seven fronts… Don't mess with us."
Hamas, however, remains in control of parts of Gaza after nearly three years of fighting. Netanyahu's critics argue that his dependence on far-right coalition partners demanding the depopulation of Gaza has prevented the establishment of an alternative governing authority to replace the terror group.
Opposition lawmakers have also accused Netanyahu of attempting to heighten public fears ahead of the election, which is three weeks away.
Recent polling has indicated a deadlock between the pro- and anti-Netanyahu blocs. A Times of Israel survey projected that the two blocs would each hold 53 seats if an election were held at the time of the poll, with the two Arab parties potentially holding the balance.
Defence Minister Israel Katz issued a similar warning earlier on Tuesday, saying he had ordered the military to "increase its readiness and be prepared for any possible scenario in Gaza" ahead of the third anniversary of the October 7 attack.
Katz cited intelligence indicating that Hamas could attempt attacks against Israeli forces in Gaza on Wednesday, the anniversary of the 2023 assault.
He ordered the IDF to prepare for worst-case scenarios and said force should be used to thwart any identified threat. If Israeli forces were harmed, Katz warned that "Hamas and the population of Gaza will pay a heavy price, beyond all proportion".
Last year, on the second anniversary of the October 7 attack, terrorists in Gaza launched a rocket towards the Israeli border community of Netiv Ha'asara. No rockets launched from Gaza have crossed into Israeli territory since then, while a rocket fired in January fell short inside the Strip.
Netanyahu also warned last week that Israel's enemies could attempt attacks ahead of the election, prompting opposition leaders to demand details about the alleged threat and question whether the warnings could be used to influence the vote.
Netanyahu subsequently briefed Opposition Leader Yair Lapid, who said there was no reason to panic the public. Lapid accused Netanyahu of issuing what he described as a campaign video and said the prime minister should instead draft "the 15,000 Haredim the IDF needs" if he was concerned about security.
The warnings have also come shortly after a separate security incident involving a flydubai flight carrying Israelis from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The Omani copilot allegedly attempted to hijack and crash the aircraft before being subdued by passengers.
As of now Israeli security officials assess that the copilot acted alone without any third-party involvement. Nevertheless, the incident has prompted criticism as well as calls for re-evaluation of Israel's aviation security procedures, including how a citizen of a country without diplomatic ties with Israel was allowed to enter the cockpit.
